On Sunday, July 6, 2025, at approximately 8:15 pm, a 2024 Freightliner semi and a 2015 Freightliner semi (both tractor trailers) were traveling eastbound on I-70 near milepost 181. It appears that the 2024 Freightliner took the view area exit and crossed the gore area to re-enter I-70 eastbound. The front of the 2015 Freightliner struck the rear of 2024 semi’s trailer in a rear end manner. The 2024’s trailer was completely destroyed in the collision and was hauling blueberry’s. The 2015 Freightliner sustained sever damage to the front of the semi. The 2024 truck came to rest in the #2 eastbound lane, and the 2015 truck came to rest in the #1 eastbound lane. The area of impact indicates that impact was made in the #2 eastbound lane. The driver of the 2015 Freightliner died on scene. The driver and co-driver of the 2024 semi were un-injured. The case will be screened through the Grand County Attorney’s Office for any potential charges.
Initial estimates were 5 to 6 hours for cleanup.Traffic was routed through the rest area to get around the scene.
