On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at approximately 2:41 pm, a Volkswagen Passat was traveling westbound on US-40 near milepost 36. The Volkswagen crossed the center line for unknown reasons, impacting a Dodge Ram 2500 truck head-on traveling eastbound. A female driver of the Passat was unrestrained and was partially ejected. The female was killed on impact. A 3-year-old female was also unrestrained and was fully ejected from the Passat and was killed on impact. Two additional juveniles in the rear seats of the Passat were also unrestrained but survived the crash. Both male juveniles were flown by helicopter to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Two male adults in the Dodge truck were properly restrained and sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance. US-40 was closed for several hours during the crash investigation.
