On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at about 1:09 pm, a Ford pickup truck was traveling westbound on SR-96, and the semi was traveling eastbound on SR-96 at milepost 17.5. The driver of the pickup lost control on ice-covered roads and veered into the eastbound lane, hitting the semi head-on. The 54-year-old female passenger in the Ford sustained serious injuries and died from the impact. The driver of the pickup was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was taken to a local hospital by private vehicle. Both directions of travel were closed for several hours during the crash investigation and cleanup.
